Mining for Miracles: Champions for BC’s Children

In 2009, Mining for Miracles enjoyed another successful year raising a total of $1,158,833 for BC Children’s Hospital. Fundraising events included the annual Teck Celebrity Pie Throw; the Ekati-Costen, Catbalue-Teck; Diamond & Jewelry Draw; Slo-pitch competition; Jeans Day as well as various corporate and employee donation programs.

A highlight for spectators and participants alike, Teck’s annual Celebrity Pie Throw raised over $700,000, showing once again their continued commitment and support for BC Children’s Hospital. Spectators and participants had the chance to win a fabulous Ekati Diamond and enjoyed a fun-filled day watching pie throwing and sampling from the delicious food fair.

Special thanks to all the participants of the Pie Throw, who showed the true spirit of generosity and a great sense of fun. To view photos and learn more about Mining for Miracles, please visit www.miningformiracles.ca.

History of the Mining Division

A founding member of the Miracle Weekend, the mining industry continues to be one of our biggest support partners. Since 1988, the mining community and associates have raised close to $14 million for the Hospital through the Mining for Miracles campaign.

In 2009, Mining for Miracles reached its campaign goal to raise $3 million to complete the construction of a world class laboratory at BC Children’s Hospital. This new Biocontainment Level 3 Lab will help support critical research in how to reduce the impact of infections and infectious diseases in children and families.

In 2007, the Mining for Miracles campaign accomplished its goal of raising $3 million for the construction of two SMART operating rooms at the hospital. Twice the size of the Hospital’s traditional ORs, these rooms are equipped with the latest surgical and communications technologies and make a real difference in the quality of surgical care children from BC receive at Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the generosity from the mining community, children at the Hospital are getting safer, more efficient and less harmful surgeries that let them return home to their loved ones sooner.

If you want to team up with other committed members of the mining industry to support BC Children’s Hospital, we want to talk to you! For further information on the Hospital and how you can get involved, please contact Trina Prior at 604-875-2504 or tprior@bcchf.ca.
